Let’s start the week by saying a massive congratulations to Andy Murray. Not in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would ever see a British Wimbledon winner, let alone one from Scotland. So a massive, massive well done to that young man for showing what is possible with a lot of hard work and self belief.
And so to this week’s musical offering.
Lost Harbours – Wooden Wires
I’ve got a lot of music for this weeks list from the excellent Crow Versus Crow radio show. This is out now and well worth checking out if you have the time
Conquering Animal Sound – On Floating Bodies
Trying exceptionally hard to get in to this record this week and so should you guys. Simply brilliant debut album the follow up is always going to be tricky and for me it has been so far. Liking not loving but certainly staying with it. Sure by this time next week it will be love. Check out the awesome video.
Fionn Regan – The Bunkhouse Volume 1: Anchor Black Tattoo
This really is a brilliant record. I have always been a massive Fionn Regan fan. This one is a grower but I cannot turn it off the stereo at the moment. It’s short and sweet and beautiful and necessary.
Gideon Wolf – I Am Wolf
Not sure what to say about this one other than it’s fantastic and you have to check it out. Such an interesting piece of music.
Peter James Taylor – Vilification
Another one I didn’t expect to find and just found through the excellent Crow Versus Crow radio show. This really is powerful stuff for fans of many, many guitars and drums all being played at once. Or at least I assume that is what is happening from the images on the bandcamp page. Anyways, make sure you get your ears around this one.
Another week and this time a very brief run down of what I recommend you check out.
Devandra Banhart – Mala
I’ve never really been a big Devandra Banhart fan other than of his art work which I saw displayed at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in a retrospective with Paul Klee. Some of his stuff was brilliant and I am assuming he’s responsible again for the gorgeous album art above. He’s also responsible, obviously, for the music and from what I have heard so far this is very much worth exploring. So I shall. And so should you.
The Staves – Facing West EP
The Staves I found through Fionn Regan. They appeared on his album ‘1o0 Acres of Sycamore’ and more recently in a video for ‘Salt and Clove’s from his most recent record. A band from Watford themselves they kind of feel like they are from the deep south of the USA. Funny because I cannot imagine a place further from that than Watford so a bit odd to know they are English! Anyways, if you dig bluegrass/american then these guys might well be for you.
Caught in the Wake Forever – Meditations in Exile
Not sure I should be sharing this one because it’s my dirty little secret. Fraser being one of my best friends has shared this new record with me and it sounds amazing. So, there is definitely something new by him coming your way but in the meantime check out his older work through mini50, hibernate and audio gourmet.
So that’s all this week really.
